Victory of the Day

Not eating the entire batch of pancakes I made for my children for breakfast. Oh, but those soft, buttery mounds taunted me.

This Weekend's Challenge

This weekend, we had our annual block party. I was asked to bring a dessert. Rather than just buying a dessert at the store and making it easy on myself, I decided to make an amazing looking recipe for s'mores bars. Apparently, I like torture. OMG, did those bars look and smell amazing. But I didn't take even one tiny little bite. Not one. But I did lick the spoon a little. But just a little.

New This Week

Veins in my feet. Who knew?

What I'm Eating Now

My garden is producing more tomatoes, basil, cucumbers and hot peppers than I can eat. Lucky for me, these four things blend beautifully in a salad that fits perfectly in my meal plan! I chop up as much of each vegetable/herb/fruit that I want, throw it in a bowl, season generously with salt and pepper, douse with red wine vinegar, then add a bit of olive oil. On days when I am feeling fancy, I add small balls of fresh mozzarella. YUM!

I Fought the Hill, and I Won!

Where I live, if I want to go anywhere, I have to go uphill. It isn't a hugely steep hill, so I didn't realize this until last summer when I attempted to take my then 2-year old on a bike ride in his Burley. I had dreams of the two of us riding to town to get an ice cream cone at the local pizza place. But those dreams were broken when I couldn't get of us up the hill by my house. At the time, I resorted to walking to town, and we got our ice cream, but that incident really defeated me and has always been in the back of my mind.

Fast forward to this summer. I had another big dream. I was going to ride my bike with the empty Burley to my son's camp to surprise him at pick up. I planned to take a route with a more gradual incline, and figured I would have no problem, since I had been doing the treadmill for a couple of months and wouldn't be pulling the extra forty pounds of my son behind me. (The way home would be all downhill). I had to give up about two minutes into the ride. I simply could not get up the hill. This was particularly humiliating because I passed a woman on the way up that I then had to pass again, minutes later, on the way down.

This week, my daughter is taking care of a friend's rabbit. The darn rabbit lives at the top of the hill. Yesterday, my daughther asked me if I would go with her to feed the rabbit. Of course, I said yes. But then she threw in her curveball. She wanted to ride bikes. No, she did not want to walk, mommy, I want to ride my bike. I reluctantly agreed to ride with her, repeatedly telling her that I would have to take her brother with us, and that because of this I would be pulling SIXTY POUNDS of extra weight and that I may not be able to make it up the hill. I was nervous, because I really didn't want to be humiliated by looking fat and out of shape in front of my daughter. But I also didn't want to say no to her just because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to make the ride. Well.....long story short.....I MADE IT! I MADE IT UP THE HILL PULLING MY SON IN HIS BURLEY! True, I was riding so slowly that a person walking at a leisurely pace could have passed me, but I did it! I am so proud of myself.

This victory may feel even more sweet than losing the last 10 pounds I lost. Honestly.

My Party Dress

My dress from Boden came today. While I was trying it on, my 3-year old walked into the room. He took one look at me and said "Oooooohhhh, that's nice. You can wear that on a date or something, right? Like for dinner tonight." Two thoughts went through my head - even my 3-year old notices when I don't dress like crap, and where the hell did he learn about going on a date?
